O'Neil auditioned for Canada Idol's season 3 in early 2005, while she was still a high-school student. Judges loved her voice and she advanced to the Top 100 round. O'Neil's performance was highly praised by the jury. But, O'Neil suffered a significant defeat in top 10 as well as the Top 9 final weeks when she got votes for top 3, and the bottom 2. They were stunned at the result and exhorted viewers to show support for those with great singing talent similar to Melissa. O'Neil's performances were such awe-inspiring that she never placed in the lower three in the future. O'Neil, Rex Goudie and Werner gave two stunning performance in September 2005. Werner reportedly said that the headlines would state that O'Neil beat Goudie and become the third Canadian Idol. She was also the first female and the youngest winner in history of the show. O'Neil's Canadian Idol victory was officially announced by President Paul Martin immediately.
